OnLive Preps for Launch

Posted by Jason Enos On January - 4 - 2010

There is a new challenger preparing to shake up the videogame console wars in a really big way.  Introducing OnLive.  OnLive, at its core, is a service that delivers high quality next-gen gaming via real-time broadband streaming, but the experience goes well beyond the service.  Through the combination of advanced technologies (Cloud Computing), new innovations (superfast streaming gameplay) and rethinking the way of doing things (minimal hardware required by the end user), OnLive has significantly lowered the barrier to entry for would-be gamers to play and enjoy the hottest games not to mention all the hard-core players who spend tons of $$$ left and right.

Existing Mac and PC owners can add a simple OnLive plug-in, which accesses the service but also enables the backend technology to support the real-time streaming.  Traditional console gamers will be able to get a small box that connects to your broadband connection and plays the games on your television.  OnLive is currently in Beta testing and planned to launch early this year.  Mobile phones are able to tap into the service as well!

We are curious to see if OnLive makes a splash at this year’s CES, but even if they don’t, you are in luck.  Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, recently delivered an impressive demonstration of OnLive at Columbia University.  This video is 48 minutes long including a Q&A session, but it is a very fascinating 48 minutes.  Video link courtesy of Columbia University.
